Bergamot occupies a distinctive place among citrus oils: gentler than lemon, less energizing than grapefruit, with a calming, complex quality that gives Earl Grey tea its characteristic aroma. Many people find bergamot genuinely uplifting and settling at once, and we describe that appeal honestly rather than making medical claims about stress relief.
Diluted into a carrier oil, bergamot's astringent quality is valued for balancing oily or blemish-prone skin, and it's a superb top note in blending — pairing well with lavender, frankincense, ylang ylang, and most floral or woody oils.
Bergamot is phototoxic — do not apply diluted oil to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 12 hours. Dilute before skin contact and patch test first.
