Calamus root has a long history across Asian, European, and Indigenous American practices, used in incense, ritual, and folk medicine. The essential oil distilled from its root carries that same ancient, earthy depth: warm, spicy-herbal, slightly woody, with a grounding quality. Steam-distilled and undiluted, it arrives as a genuine single-botanical oil.
Calamus oil naturally contains beta-asarone, a compound that has led health authorities in several countries to restrict or caution against its use, particularly for internal or prolonged application — we think this is worth knowing before you buy, not something to bury in fine print. We recommend using it sparingly, for external diffuser or well-diluted topical use only, never ingesting it, and avoiding regular or prolonged daily use.
Used occasionally and in small amounts, calamus functions as a fixative and base note in blending — a drop or two extends and enriches other oils around it. Combined with patchouli, frankincense, or cedarwood, it creates a deep, centering diffuser blend for meditation or quiet moments.
Given the beta-asarone content, we recommend this oil for occasional, well-diluted use only; those who are pregnant, nursing, or managing a health condition should consult a healthcare provider before use, and it should never be used with or around children.
