This plaque depicts Cú Chulainn (also spelled Cuchulain), one of the central heroes of the Ulster Cycle in Irish mythology. Originally named Setanta, he was said to have trained under the warrior-woman Scáthach and, in some tellings, to be the son of the god Lugh. The plaque illustrates a scene from his legendary defense of Ulster against the forces of Queen Medb (Maeve) of Connacht, wielding the Gae Bolg, a barbed spear from the mythological tradition.
Cú Chulainn's story is one of the best-known tales in Irish mythology, and this piece is a decorative tribute to that legend—a striking display item for anyone drawn to Celtic history and folklore.
Measures approximately 5 1/4"h x 4"w x 7/8"d.
