Hem Arruda Incense Sticks are named for arruda, twenty sticks to a pack. Arruda is the Portuguese name for rue, and it is a genuine plant rather than a fragrance concept invented for a label.

Rue is Ruta graveolens, a small Mediterranean shrub with blue-green leaves and a smell that divides people immediately: sharp, green and distinctly bitter, closer to a crushed herb than to anything sweet. Its Latin name means heavy-smelling, which tells you how the Romans felt about it. Nothing else in this batch sits anywhere near it.

The plant carries real weight in folk practice, particularly in Brazil, where a sprig of arruda kept in the house is a familiar thing, and across the Mediterranean before that. That practice is concerned with prosperity and with happiness, and we report it as practice rather than as something the smoke performs.

One caution belongs with the actual plant rather than the incense. Fresh rue can irritate skin badly and cause a phototoxic reaction in sunlight, which is why handling it is treated carefully. This is a fragranced incense stick, not the herb, so that warning is context rather than a hazard here — but it is worth knowing what the plant is.

The listing is also unusually careful on one point, and we will repeat it rather than soften it: this is not a registered pest-control, disinfecting, or air-purifying product. Burning it adds fragrance to a room and does nothing else. More of the range sits in our Hem Incense Sticks collection.

No burn time is printed on this listing, so we do not quote one, and no holder is included. Set a fire-safe holder on a stable, heat-resistant surface before lighting, burn in a ventilated room away from drafts, children and pets, and let the ash cool fully before it is cleared. More of the category sits in our Incense Sticks collection.
