Herb & Earth Matcha Bamboo Incense Sticks from Nippon Kodo carry a soft, refreshing green-tea fragrance on a bamboo core. Twenty sticks to a pack, each burning for approximately twenty-five minutes, made without artificial dyes.

Green tea is a genuinely rare incense note, and it does something no other category on the shelf does. Florals are sweet, woods are warm, resins are deep — matcha is vegetal, soft, and faintly bitter, closer to the smell of a cup of tea being poured than to anything you would normally call a fragrance.

It is also the quietest scent in the range, and that is intentional rather than a shortcoming. It does not fill a room so much as change its edges. In a large space or a draft you may lose it altogether, which is worth knowing before you buy it expecting something assertive. Burn it in a small room with the door shut and it makes considerably more sense.

The low-smoke build is not a marketing line on this one; it is the whole reason the product works. A note this light would be completely buried under the smoke a heavy masala stick produces. Compare it with the rest of the line in our Nippon Kodo collection.

Twenty-five minutes is right for it. Matcha is a background fragrance, and background fragrances work best in short doses where they register as atmosphere rather than as something you are actively smelling. Longer and you stop perceiving it altogether, which rather defeats the purpose of lighting one.

No holder comes in the pack, so set out a fire-safe dish first, on a stable, non-flammable surface, and burn in a well-ventilated room away from children and pets. More options sit in our Incense Sticks collection.
