Herb & Earth Rose Bamboo Incense Sticks from Nippon Kodo carry a delicate rose fragrance on a bamboo core. Twenty sticks to a pack, each burning for approximately twenty-five minutes, made without artificial dyes.

Delicate is the operative word, and it is the harder thing to achieve. Rose incense usually arrives as a thick, sweet perfume — recognizable as rose, certainly, but closer to a bottle of scent than to a flower. Keeping it light asks more of the build than making it strong would, since strength is the easy default and restraint has to be designed in.

A light floral is also the note most easily lost. Of everything in this range, rose is the fragrance a heavy masala construction would do the most damage to: enough smoke and what you are smelling is no longer a flower at all, just a warm sweetness with a rose-shaped memory somewhere behind it.

That makes the low-smoke construction the whole proposition here rather than a feature listed alongside others. What reaches you is meant to be the floral itself. See how the rest of the line handles the same problem in our Nippon Kodo collection.

Its lightness suits small rooms particularly well. A bathroom, a bedroom, a study — spaces where the Patchouli or the Frankincense from the same range would be considerably too much for the volume of air available. Delicacy stops being a compromise once the room is small enough.

No holder comes in the pack, so set out a fire-safe dish before lighting, on a stable, non-flammable surface, and burn in a well-ventilated room away from children and pets. More florals sit in our Incense Sticks collection.
