Patchouli is one of the most distinctive oils in aromatherapy — deeply earthy, rich, dark, and musky, with a slightly fermented complexity that either defines a scent profile or forms its indispensable base note. Steam-distilled from the leaves, it arrives undiluted and single-botanical.
Used sparingly in a diffuser, it pairs well with rose or ylang ylang for a rich floral-earthy blend, or bergamot and sandalwood for something more sophisticated.
Unlike most essential oils, patchouli tends to mellow and deepen with age when stored properly. Diluted into a carrier oil, it’s also a longtime favorite in skincare for dry or mature skin, and one of the most valuable base notes in natural perfumery.
As with any essential oil, dilute before skin contact and patch test first.
