Within Guatemalan folk religion, few figures are as widely recognized as San Simón, also called Maximón in some Mayan and folk Catholic communities. He sits outside the Catholic Church's formal canon of saints — his devotion grew as its own syncretic tradition — and we describe him here plainly and respectfully as the folk saint he is, rather than implying an official Church endorsement he does not carry.
