Named resin, named method. Boswellia carterii, hydro-distilled from resin, sourced from Somalia and India, in the Burseraceae family. Anyone can print “100% pure”. Naming the species and the distillation route is smaller and far more useful.

Paperwork most sellers cannot produce. HIQILI publishes a safety data sheet, IFRA conformity certificate, allergen declaration, certificate of analysis and a GC profile for its oils. The GC analysis is the one that matters — it is a chemical fingerprint of what is actually in the bottle, and it is the only real answer to “is this pure?”. Ask before ordering and we will request the set for your specific oil.

“Therapeutic grade”, and what it is worth. The box carries that phrase, as almost every essential oil box does. No regulator or standards body issues such a grade, so it is the maker’s own wording rather than an independent certification — which is exactly why the GC analysis above is the claim worth asking for instead.

Cheaper than our other HIQILI pages, and we will say so. We carry more than one HIQILI 100ml listing because the supplier groups them differently, and the shared scents are not priced the same. This is the cheaper one. It would be easy to leave you to find that out; we would rather point at it.

Somewhere to run them. Frankincense is slow to fill a room and rewards a longer session. The humidifier and diffuser range covers ultrasonic and cold-air units, and the oil burners need only a tealight.

A resin, not a flower or a leaf. Frankincense is tapped as hardened sap and hydro-distilled from it, which is why it smells the way it does: fresh and piney and faintly lemony on top, over something dry, old and quiet underneath. Roughly three kilos of resin yield a hundred millilitres of oil.

The base-note end of the range. Frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood together are the oils that make a blend last. Add lavender, clove, vanilla and lemongrass and you have a working shelf rather than a novelty set — the twelve here lean grounding where our other HIQILI listing leans floral.

Fitted glass dropper. Frankincense is thick and slow out of a plain reducer cap. A pipette lets you take it drop by counted drop, which matters when it is anchoring a blend rather than carrying it.

In a diffuser. Five to eight drops per 100ml of water. Frankincense is not a loud oil and gains from a longer run rather than a bigger dose — it settles into a room instead of announcing itself.

On skin, always diluted. Two to three drops in a tablespoon of carrier oil is a comfortable strength for the body, half that for the face. Patch test first and give it a day.

As the base of a blend. Frankincense, patchouli and sandalwood are the anchors: a few drops under lavender, sweet orange or lemongrass will hold the blend together long after the top notes have gone. Start at one part base to three parts everything else.

Steam inhalation. Three or four drops in a bowl of hot water, head under a towel, eyes closed. Keep the water off boiling and stop if it feels harsh.

In candles, soap and balms. Add off the heat and test a small pour. Resinous oils survive wax better than citrus does, which makes frankincense one of the more reliable choices for candle work.

One botanical per bottle. Each variant is a single plant's oil rather than a blend. The frankincense is Boswellia carterii, hydro-distilled from resin, described by HIQILI as fresh, lemony, piney, resinous, spicy and woodsy.

Twelve botanicals, twelve chemistries. Patchouli is thick and dark and improves with age; lemon is thin and fades fast. Nothing you establish with one carries over automatically to another.

Additive-free, per the maker. HIQILI states no additives or carriers and marks the range non-GMO and not tested on animals. The GC profile is the document that substantiates the first of those, and we can request it for a specific oil.

Three years for the frankincense. HIQILI states three years for this oil stored properly, shorter than several others in the range. Treat it as the maker's figure rather than a guarantee and follow any date on the bottle.

Cool, dark, capped, upright. Store the bottle standing so oil is not sitting against the dropper bulb, keep the cap firm between uses, and keep it away from radiators and sunny sills.

Patchouli is the exception. Most oils are best young. Patchouli genuinely improves with a few years on it, softening and deepening — one of the few in this range worth keeping rather than using up.

Lemon and sweet orange go first. Citrus oxidises fastest and turns sharp. Buy those with a plan for using them; the resins will outlast them comfortably.

Never neat, never swallowed. Dilute before any skin contact, patch test each new oil, keep them clear of eyes and mucous membranes, and do not take them internally.

Clove is the hot one here. Clove bud irritates skin at concentrations the resins tolerate easily, and is one to keep well diluted and away from broken skin.

Citrus and sunlight. Lemon and sweet orange can be phototoxic. Keep them off skin heading into direct sun within twelve hours of application.

Steam inhalation, carefully. Keep the water below boiling, eyes closed, and stop if it feels harsh in the throat. It is not suitable for young children.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Diffuse briefly in a ventilated room a pet can leave freely, keep bottles out of reach, and ask a professional if you are pregnant, nursing or under medical care.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin. Clove is a strong sensitiser and wants the low end of any dilution.
