1. Find a still surface. Set the burner on a flat, heat-resistant surface away from fans, vents, or open windows.

2. Light a backflow cone. Use a backflow cone only (it has a hollow base). Light the tip and let it catch for a few seconds.

3. Seat it over the opening. Blow out the flame so the cone smolders, then set it over the burner's opening with the hollow base aligned.

4. Let it settle. Give it 30–60 seconds; the smoke will start sinking and flowing down through the nostrils once it finds its rhythm.
