Top 5 Essential Oils for Ultimate Relaxation

By Jennifer Campbell — working in aromatherapy retail since 2015. Reviewed and updated July 2026.

In a busy world, a few minutes of calm matter. One simple way many people wind down is with essential oils — concentrated plant extracts prized for their aroma. Below are five oils people most often reach for to relax. An honest note first: aromatherapy is a self-care practice, not a medical treatment, and the research is still developing (see NCCIH). Enjoy these for relaxation, and talk to a healthcare professional about any health concern.

1. Lavender — the all-rounder

Lavender is usually the first oil people try for relaxation. Some studies suggest its aroma may have a calming effect on mood, though the research is still developing (Koulivand et al., 2013). A few drops in a diffuser before bed, or in a warm bath, is a lovely way to unwind. Shop Lavender Essential Oil.

How to use: 4–5 drops in a diffuser, or dilute in a carrier oil and apply to temples or wrists.

2. Roman Chamomile — the bedtime companion

Chamomile has long been associated with calm and is a gentle choice for the evening. Many people use it in a diffuser before bed to set a relaxing mood. Shop Chamomile Body Oil.

How to use: 3–4 drops in a diffuser.

3. Ylang-Ylang — the mood lifter

Ylang-ylang has a sweet, floral scent people often find uplifting and relaxing. Shop Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil.

How to use: 2–3 drops in a diffuser, or 1–2 drops on a cloth to inhale.

4. Bergamot — bright and calming

Bergamot, from the peel of the bergamot orange, has a citrus scent that's calming and uplifting at once — a popular pick when your mood needs a gentle lift. Shop Bergamot Essential Oil.

How to use: 3–4 drops in a diffuser, or a few drops in a warm bath.

5. Sandalwood — grounding for quiet moments

Sandalwood's warm, woody aroma is a favourite for meditation and quiet moments, valued for its grounding feel. Shop Sandalwood Body Oil.

How to use: 3–5 drops in a diffuser, or dilute in a carrier oil for topical use.

A Few Safety Notes

  • Dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch-test first.
  • Don't ingest essential oils unless guided by a qualified professional.
  • If you're pregnant, nursing, or have a health condition, check with your healthcare provider first.
  • Choose pure oils from a reputable source.
