Where it's used. A few drops in a diffuser or oil burner, or diluted in a carrier oil for massage and skincare blending.

Cool, dark, capped, upright. Heat and daylight age these oils fastest — store bottles standing away from direct sun.

Citrus and pine fade quickest. Sweet orange and pine needles are more volatile and soften sooner than resins like frankincense or myrrh.

General guide. Stored properly, most of this range typically holds its character for a year or two; treat that as guidance and follow any date on the bottle first.

Mind what it sits on. Undiluted oil can mark polished or painted surfaces — decant over something wipeable.

Dilute before skin contact. These are concentrated oils; dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test each one individually.

Sweet orange is phototoxic. Keep it off skin that will see direct sun within twelve hours.

Away from eyes, never swallowed. Keep clear of eyes and mucous membranes; rinse with plenty of water and seek advice if irritation persists.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Clove, thyme and cinnamon are among those most often flagged for caution in pregnancy and around young children — check before use, and diffuse briefly in a room a pet can leave freely.
