The shelf nobody else stocks. Most 100ml ranges stop at lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and orange, because those are what sell. Turmeric, copaiba, anise star and helichrysum are what you go hunting for and normally find only in a 10ml bottle at a specialist price.

This page earns its place on the ones it does not carry. If the oil you want appears on both, buy it there; we would rather point that out than quietly take the difference.

Priced by the plant, not flattened. Sweet orange sits at the bottom of the range and rose at the top, close to double, because the raw materials genuinely differ in what they cost to produce. A range priced flat is telling you something about its contents.

Labelled therapeutic grade — and what that means. MAYJAM prints “100% Essential Oil” and, on some labels, “therapeutic grade” or “premium quality”. Worth knowing that no regulator or standards body issues that grade; it is the maker’s own description rather than an independent certification. We would rather say so than let the phrase do work it has not earned.

Honest about the expensive four. Rose, jasmine, neroli and sandalwood cost a fraction here of what a true absolute or attar costs at this volume, so treat them as scented preparations built around those botanicals rather than undiluted single distillates. The oregano, clove, tea tree and citrus oils raise no such question.

Something to run them in. Cold-air and ultrasonic units suit these best. The humidifier and diffuser range covers what accepts neat oil and what needs water, and the oil burners need only a tealight.

Twenty-eight botanicals, bottled alone. Oregano, helichrysum, copaiba, turmeric, anise star, juniper berry, clary sage and myrrh sit here beside the lavender and sweet orange everyone stocks. Nothing is pre-mixed, so every proportion in a blend stays yours to set.

The difficult oils at a working size. Helichrysum and copaiba are usually sold in 10ml and priced to match, which makes experimenting with them expensive. At 100ml they become oils you can use freely rather than ration.

A glass pipette, not a reducer cap. A dropper lets you count what goes in. That is the difference between a blend you liked once and a blend you can make again next month in exactly the same proportions.

Roughly two thousand drops a bottle. Around twenty drops make a millilitre, so one bottle covers hundreds of diffuser sessions or a long run of candles, soaps and room sprays without reordering mid-batch.

In a diffuser. Five to ten drops per 100ml of water is a sensible start, adjusted to the room. Use only a machine that states it is essential-oil compatible, and rinse the reservoir between oils — clove and oregano leave a residue that will colour whatever you run next.

On skin, always diluted. One to two percent in a carrier oil for the body, which is six to twelve drops in 30ml; half that for the face. Oregano, clove bud, cinnamon and lemongrass are strong sensitisers and want the lower end of any range, or a patch test first.

In the bath. Never straight into the water, where oil floats undispersed against skin. Premix five to ten drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented base and stir that through.

In candles, soap and sprays. Essential oils behave differently from fragrance oils in wax — many flash off at pouring temperature and citrus fades fastest of all. Add off the heat, test a small pour before committing a batch, and expect a softer throw than a synthetic gives.

Building a blend. Work in counted drops and write the count down. A base note such as myrrh, sandalwood or copaiba holds the blend together, a middle such as clary sage or geranium gives it body, and citrus or spearmint supplies the opening.

One plant per bottle. Each variant is the essential oil of the botanical named on the label, bottled on its own. Choosing Helichrysum gets you helichrysum, not a helichrysum-led mixture, and nothing here is a house blend despite what the old listing title suggested.

Composition varies by variant. Twenty-eight botanicals means twenty-eight different chemistries. Viscosity, colour, staying power and skin tolerance all differ between them, so nothing you establish with one oil carries over automatically to another.

Documentation for makers. If you are selling what you make and need a GC/MS report, allergen declaration or safety data sheet for a particular botanical, ask before ordering so we can check what the supplier holds for that specific oil.

Cool, dark, capped, upright. Amber glass handles daylight; heat and air are the rest of the problem. Keep the cap firm between uses, store the bottle standing so oil is not sitting against the dropper insert, and keep it off sunny sills and away from radiators.

Citrus goes first. Sweet orange, tangerine, bergamot and grapefruit oxidise fastest and are the ones to buy with a plan for. Myrrh, sandalwood and copaiba are resinous base notes and hold their character considerably longer.

A general guide, not a promise. Stored properly, most essential oils of this type keep well for a year or two, and the resins longer. Follow any date printed on the bottle in preference to that, and trust your nose over both — an oil that smells sharp or flat has turned.

Mind what it stands on. Undiluted essential oil marks polished and painted surfaces and softens some plastics. Decant over something wipeable and clear spills straight away.

Never neat, never swallowed. These are concentrated plant extracts. Dilute in a carrier oil before any skin contact, patch test each new oil on a small area, keep them clear of eyes and mucous membranes, and do not take them internally.

The hot oils need more care. Oregano, clove bud, cinnamon and lemongrass irritate skin at concentrations the gentler oils tolerate easily. Treat them as the exception in any recipe rather than swapping them in drop for drop.

Citrus and sunlight. Bergamot, grapefruit, sweet orange and tangerine can be phototoxic. Keep them off skin that will see direct sun within twelve hours of application.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Camphor, anise star, clary sage, rosemary and the hot oils are the ones most often flagged for caution in pregnancy and around young children. Diffuse briefly in a ventilated room a pet can leave freely, and ask a professional if you are pregnant, nursing or under medical care.

Stop if your skin objects. Redness, itching or small bumps mean discontinue — wash the area with a plain carrier oil rather than water, which spreads it, and seek advice if it persists.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and take particular care with oregano, clove bud, cinnamon and lemongrass.
