Set it on a stable surface. Place the gourd stand on a flat, heat-resistant surface.

Choose how many sticks to burn. Insert one stick for a lighter scent, or fill more of the nine holes for a stronger effect in a larger room.

Light and let it burn. Light each stick's tip and let it settle into a steady ember; leave the stand undisturbed while lit.

Let it cool. Wait until the brass and copper have cooled before moving or emptying the stand.

Empty the ash plate. Tip out collected ash and wipe the stand with a dry cloth to keep the nine holes clear for the next use.
