The cultivar is the product. “Geranium” on a label can mean several things. Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum is the rose-scented one, grown in Egypt and steam-distilled from the leaves, and HIQILI describes it as fresh, herbaceous, lemony, minty, rosy and sweet. That is a checkable description rather than an adjective.

Paperwork most sellers cannot produce. HIQILI publishes a safety data sheet, IFRA conformity certificate, allergen declaration, certificate of analysis and a GC profile for its oils. The GC analysis is the one that matters — it is a chemical fingerprint of what is actually in the bottle, and it is the only real answer to “is this pure?”. Ask before ordering and we will request the set for your specific oil.

“Therapeutic grade”, and what it is worth. The box carries that phrase, as almost every essential oil box does. No regulator or standards body issues such a grade, so it is the maker’s own wording rather than an independent certification — which is exactly why the GC analysis above is the claim worth asking for instead.

Honest about the rose variant. This page also offers a “rose” bottle. At 100ml for this price it is a scented preparation built around the flower, not a true rose otto or absolute, which costs many multiples of this per millilitre. The geranium beside it is the real thing at an honest price — which is rather the argument for buying the geranium.

Somewhere to run it. Rose geranium fills a room quickly and stays green rather than turning sweet. The humidifier and diffuser range covers ultrasonic and cold-air units, and the oil burners need only a tealight.

Rose, from a leaf. Rose geranium smells startlingly close to rose — rosy and sweet, but with a green, faintly minty, lemony edge that true rose does not have. It is the oil perfumers have used to extend and imitate rose for two centuries, and it is honest about being itself.

The specific cultivar, named. This is Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum, the rose-scented variety, not the generic geranium a label can mean. The distinction is the whole point of the oil, and most listings never make it.

Affordable in a way rose is not. Twenty-three kilos of leaf make a hundred millilitres of oil, which is a lot of plant — and still nothing beside what a rose distillation demands. If you want a rosy note you can actually use freely, this is how to get one.

Eleven more single botanicals. The same bottle is offered in rose, lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, vanilla, citronella, sandalwood, cinnamon, jasmine and frankincense, so a floral, a citrus, a base and the summer citronella can arrive together.

In a diffuser. Four to six drops per 100ml of water. Rose geranium is more assertive than it smells on the bottle rim, and a little keeps its green edge where a lot flattens into sweetness.

On skin, always diluted. One to two percent in a carrier oil for the body — six to twelve drops in 30ml — and half that for the face. Patch test on the inside of the elbow and wait a day; it is a common enough sensitiser to be worth the caution.

Stretching a rose blend. A drop or two of rose geranium under a rose-led blend deepens and lengthens it for a fraction of the cost. This is the classic use, and it works because the two share several of the same aromatic molecules.

In the bath. Premix four or five drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented base before it goes near the water, never straight onto the surface.

In soap and candles. Geranium holds up better than most florals in cold-process soap. Add off the heat, test a single loaf or pour before a full batch, and expect the green note to soften as it cures.

One botanical per bottle. Each variant is a single plant's oil rather than a blend. The geranium is Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum, steam-distilled from the leaves in Egypt, in the Geraniaceae family.

Five years, as stated for this oil. HIQILI gives geranium a five-year shelf life stored properly. Treat that as the maker's figure rather than a guarantee, and follow any date printed on the bottle in preference to it.

Cool, dark, capped, upright. Keep the cap firm between uses, store the bottle standing so oil is not sitting against the dropper bulb, and keep it away from radiators and sunny sills.

Lemon and citronella age fastest. Both oxidise quickly and turn sharp. The geranium, sandalwood and frankincense on this page are considerably more forgiving.

Watch the green note. Rose geranium losing its herbaceous edge and going flatly sweet is the first sign it is past its best, usually before any other change is obvious.

Never neat, never swallowed. Dilute before any skin contact, patch test each new oil, keep them clear of eyes and mucous membranes, and do not take them internally.

Geranium is a known sensitiser. It is one of the more common causes of contact reaction among the gentle-seeming florals, so the patch test is not a formality here. Stop at the first sign of redness or itching.

Cinnamon is the hot one. It irritates skin at concentrations the florals tolerate easily and wants the low end of any dilution.

Citrus and sunlight. Lemon can be phototoxic. Keep it off skin heading into direct sun within twelve hours of application.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Diffuse briefly in a ventilated room a pet can leave freely, keep bottles out of reach, and ask a professional if you are pregnant, nursing or under medical care.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin. Geranium is a recognised skin sensitiser — patch test before any wider use.
