A set is for narrowing down. Buying sixteen large bottles of oils you have never smelled is how a shelf fills with things nobody uses. Ten millilitres each is enough to learn what you like and cheap enough that being wrong fifteen times does not matter.

Descriptors beat guesswork. Most sets give you sixteen names and leave you to it. Printed notes on the labels are a small thing that makes a genuine difference the first few weeks, especially if the set is a gift for someone new to this.

We tell you what the price means. Rose, jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla cannot be genuine distillates at sixteen bottles for this money, and we say so on the page rather than repeating the packaging. The everyday oils in the set are exactly what they claim to be.

Then buy the favourites bigger. Once you know which few you reach for, the Diffuser Essential Oil collection carries most of them as 100ml single notes, which is a different price per millilitre altogether.

The labels tell you how each one smells. Every bottle prints its own short description — patchouli “musky, earthy”, rosemary “warm, herbaceous, slightly sweet”, lemon “fresh, clean, sharp”. Sixteen unfamiliar names become sixteen you can actually choose between.

Sixteen directions to try. Bright citrus, sharp herbs, warm resins, soft florals and one spice, all in the same box. The point of a set this size is not to use all sixteen equally but to find the four or five you keep going back to.

Two droppers in the box. Glass pipettes, included rather than sold separately. They are what let you count drops into a diffuser or a carrier oil instead of pouring and guessing, which is the difference between a blend you can repeat and one you cannot.

Ready to give as it arrives. Amber bottles with gold caps, seated in a black foam tray inside a printed box with botanical line art. Nothing needs repacking or wrapping before it goes to someone else.

Start with three drops. Three to five drops per 100ml of water in an ultrasonic diffuser, then adjust. Peppermint, cinnamon, lemongrass and tea tree carry much further than lavender or vanilla, so cut those back rather than opening a window later.

Fit a dropper, then work. Put one of the included pipettes into whichever bottle you are using and leave the rest capped. Counting drops is what makes a blend repeatable; pouring from the neck is what makes it a one-off.

Two or three at a time. A good starting shape is one citrus, one herb and a small amount of something heavy — sweet orange with rosemary and a single drop of patchouli, say. Write the counts down as you go and the good ones come back.

On skin, only diluted. Six to twelve drops per 30ml of carrier oil for the body, half that for the face, and patch test first. Keep the cinnamon out of skin blends entirely — it is one of the most irritating oils in common use.

Or into what you make. Candles, melts, bath salts, room and linen sprays. Ten millilitres goes a long way in a small batch, and sixteen scents gives you room to experiment without committing much of any one.

What the price can and cannot buy. The lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, lemongrass, rosemary, lemon and sweet orange are genuinely affordable oils at this scale. True rose otto, jasmine absolute, Indian sandalwood and vanilla are not — and jasmine and vanilla cannot be steam-distilled into essential oil at all. Enjoy those four as scent; do not treat them as material for skincare.

About “therapeutic grade”. The box carries the phrase, along with “pure plant” and “100% essential oil”. No authority issues a therapeutic grade; it is the manufacturer's wording, and we report it rather than endorse it.

Each behaves differently. Strength, staying power and skin safety vary enormously across the sixteen. Check an unfamiliar oil before putting it anywhere near the body, even diluted.

Keep them in the tray. The foam insert holds sixteen small bottles upright and in one place, which is most of what storage means here. A cupboard beats a windowsill — amber glass slows daylight down but does not stop it.

Cap them properly. Air is what ages an opened oil. Take the dropper out and screw the cap back down rather than leaving a pipette sitting in the neck between sessions.

Citrus first, resins last. Lemon, sweet orange and bergamot turn well before the rest, so use those early. Patchouli and sandalwood are at the other end and simply get rounder with time.

When one smells wrong. Sharp or faintly varnish-like means oxidised, and an oxidised oil is more likely to irritate skin. Keep it for cleaning sprays and diffusing and stop using it on the body.

Never neat on skin, never swallowed. Dilute in a carrier oil before any skin contact and do not ingest these. Cinnamon and lemongrass in particular can burn undiluted, and cinnamon is best left out of skin blends entirely.

Patch test each new one. Diluted oil on the inner forearm, left 24 hours. Sixteen oils means sixteen separate questions — tolerating lavender tells you nothing about bergamot.

Citrus and sunlight. Bergamot and lemon can make skin burn more easily in sun. Keep them off exposed skin for at least twelve hours before daylight, or use them in the diffuser instead.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary and cinnamon all carry cautions around young children or in pregnancy, and cats tolerate diffused oils poorly. Ventilate the room, ask a professional if you are unsure, and stop if anyone — or any animal — seems unsettled.

Small bottles, out of reach. Sixteen 10ml bottles are easy for a child to open and easy to knock over. Store the whole box up high, away from heat and flame, and wipe spills at once — undiluted oil marks polished wood, paint and some plastics.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test any oil you have not used before.
