For the people who make things. Candles, soap, melts, bath salts and room sprays go through oil at a rate no diffuser matches. Ten millilitres disappears in about two batches; a hundred is a working supply.

Twelve chosen, not fifty listed. A short range is a decision rather than an omission. These are the oils people come back to, which makes choosing a matter of minutes instead of an afternoon of research.

Something to diffuse them in. The labels mark diffusion, cleaning and perfume blending as the three uses. For the first, our humidifier and diffuser range sets out tank sizes and run times.

The heavy, beautiful end. Jasmine, ylang ylang, rose, sandalwood and frankincense — the oils that give a blend depth and keep it in the room. Sweet orange, lemon and bergamot are here to lift them.

The label tells you how it smells. Each bottle prints its own character — jasmine reads “exotic and sensual, floral, sweet”. Small thing, until you own a dozen brown bottles and have to open each one to remember.

The size that stops rationing. HIQILI sells these at 10ml, 30ml and 100ml and says on its own packaging that the larger bottles cost less per millilitre. For an oil you already love, small is the expensive choice.

Dropper supplied, cap still seals. A gold-collared glass pipette comes with the bottle rather than fitted into it — on while you work, off afterwards, so nothing evaporates between sessions.

Three to five drops in a diffuser. Per 100ml of water, then adjust. Peppermint and eucalyptus carry much further than jasmine or vanilla, so start those lower and work up over a couple of sessions.

Fit the pipette, then work. Swap the screw cap for the supplied dropper while you are measuring and put the cap back afterwards. Counting drops is what makes a blend repeatable and stops a 100ml bottle emptying faster than it should.

Into what you make. Candle and melt wax typically takes six to ten per cent fragrance load, cold-process soap around three; check your own recipe rather than a rule of thumb. This is the size that makes a full batch viable.

On skin, only diluted. Six to twelve drops per 30ml of carrier oil for the body, half that for the face, patch tested first. Keep bergamot and lemon off skin that will see sun within twelve hours.

In cleaning, sparingly. The label suggests it and lemon and eucalyptus suit it, but oil does not dissolve in water — mix into a little unscented liquid soap first, and keep neat oil off sealed wood and stone.

The twelve. Jasmine, ylang ylang, rose, lavender, sandalwood, frankincense, vanilla, sweet orange, lemon, bergamot, eucalyptus and peppermint — one botanical per bottle, chosen at checkout.

What the price can and cannot buy. The lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, bergamot and sweet orange are genuinely affordable at this scale. Jasmine, rose, vanilla and Indian sandalwood are not — and jasmine and vanilla cannot be steam-distilled into essential oil at all. Treat those four as scent, not skincare material.

The marks on the packaging. Non-GMO, 100% natural, not tested on animals and a sustainable-sourcing symbol. These are HIQILI's own claims; we pass them on rather than verify them, and none is an independent certification.

Each oil is its own product. Strength, staying power and skin safety differ enormously across the twelve. Nothing you learn about lavender carries over to peppermint or bergamot.

Amber glass and a tight cap. The bottle blocks most of the light that ages an oil; the rest is down to heat and air. Keep it cool, dark and upright, and screw the cap back on rather than leaving the pipette in the neck.

Citrus ages fastest. Lemon, sweet orange and bergamot turn well before the rest, so use those first if you have several open. Frankincense and sandalwood sit at the other end and get rounder with time.

A hundred millilitres is a commitment. It lasts long enough that storage genuinely matters. A cupboard away from the diffuser beats a shelf beside it, and a warm room shortens the life of everything on it.

Judge it by the smell. Sharp or faintly varnish-like means the oil has oxidised, and an oxidised oil irritates skin more readily than a fresh one. Move it to cleaning and diffusing rather than discarding it.

Never neat on skin, never swallowed. Dilute in a carrier oil before any skin contact and do not ingest these oils, whatever the label's “100% natural” wording suggests.

Patch test each new one. Diluted oil on the inner forearm, left 24 hours. Reactions often build with repeat exposure rather than appearing the first time, so a single comfortable use is not proof.

Citrus oils and sunlight. Bergamot and lemon can make skin burn more easily in sun. Keep them off exposed skin for at least twelve hours before daylight, or use them in a diffuser instead.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Peppermint and eucalyptus carry cautions around young children, several of these carry cautions in pregnancy, and cats tolerate diffused oils poorly. Ventilate the room, ask a professional if unsure, and stop if anyone — or any animal — seems unsettled.

Flammable, and hard on finishes. Keep the bottle away from naked flame and heat, out of reach of children and pets, and wipe spills at once — undiluted oil marks polished wood, paint and some plastics.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test any oil you have not used before.
