Recipes are the hard part. Anyone can sell fifteen bottles. Knowing that lavender, sweet orange and one drop of chamomile is a better evening than any of the three alone is what most people never get to, and it is written down here.

The right size for a recipe. Five millilitres is about a hundred drops — enough to run a blend regularly for months without the outlay of full-size bottles you may never repeat.

An easy gift to get right. Sets like this are usually given to someone who has never blended anything. Handing them seven finished starting points, rather than fifteen decisions, is the difference between a box that gets used and one that sits in a drawer.

We leave the health claims out. The manufacturer's images name a medical effect for every oil. We do not repeat any of them. The blends are presented here as what they are: pleasant, well-judged scent combinations.

Seven blends, already worked out. One for each day, printed on the insert with the drop counts. Owning fifteen oils and knowing what to do with them on a Tuesday evening are different things, and this set closes that gap on the first night.

Fifteen oils that work together. The recipes deliberately reuse the same handful — lavender, peppermint, sweet orange and chamomile carry most of the week — so the set behaves like one kit rather than fifteen unrelated bottles.

Two droppers in the box. Glass pipettes, included. A recipe written in drops is only useful if you can actually count them, which is why they matter more here than in a set with no recipes at all.

A box worth giving as it is. Black card with gold foil, titled a Diary of Essential Oils. It needs no wrapping, and it keeps every bottle in the dark while it sits on a shelf.

Start with a day. Take one of the seven printed blends, drop it into a diffuser filled per your machine's manual, and run it. Monday's lavender, sweet orange and chamomile is the gentlest place to begin.

Keep the ratios, change the scale. The counts on the insert suit a standard tank. In a small room halve them; in an open-plan space add a drop of the lead oil rather than more of everything, which is what usually turns a blend muddy.

Then start altering them. Swap lemon for grapefruit, or add a single drop of sandalwood underneath something bright. Working from a recipe you already like is a far faster way to learn blending than starting from nothing.

On skin, only diluted. Six to twelve drops per 30ml of carrier oil for the body, half that for the face, patch tested first. Keep the cinnamon and lemongrass out of skin blends entirely, and keep lemon off skin that will see sun within twelve hours.

Clean between blends. Empty and wipe the diffuser when you change days. Yesterday's cinnamon sitting in the reservoir will find its way into tonight's rose, and neither will be what you wanted.

The fifteen, as printed on the bottles. Lavender, peppermint, rosemary, chamomile, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, sweet orange, lemongrass, cinnamon, sandalwood, ylang ylang, jasmine, rose and vanilla — 5ml of each.

What the price can and cannot buy. The lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, rosemary, lemongrass and citrus oils are genuinely affordable at this scale. True rose otto, jasmine absolute, Indian sandalwood and vanilla are not — and jasmine and vanilla cannot be steam-distilled into essential oil at all. Enjoy those four as scent rather than as skincare material.

About “therapeutic grade”. Every label in the set carries the phrase. No regulator or standards body issues such a grade; it is the manufacturer's wording, reported here rather than endorsed.

Claims we do not carry over. The supplier's images list medical effects for each oil — among them claims about blood pressure, inflammation, infection and sunburn. None of that appears in our copy, and none of it should be taken as a reason to buy.

Two years unopened, below 30°C. Those are PHATOIL's own figures from the parameter panel. Follow any date printed on a bottle in preference to them.

Keep them in the box. The black card blocks light completely and holds fifteen small bottles upright in one place. It is better storage than a shelf, and it means nothing gets lost behind something else.

Small bottles need firm caps. Five millilitres has little oil and a lot of air once you are halfway down. Screw the cap back on properly and do not leave a dropper resting in the neck between blends.

Citrus first. Lemon and sweet orange turn well before the rest and appear in four of the seven blends, so they will run down first anyway. If either smells sharp or varnish-like, replace it rather than working around it.

External use only, never swallowed. PHATOIL states this on the packaging and we repeat it. Dilute in a carrier oil before any skin contact and do not ingest these oils.

Cinnamon needs respect. It is one of the most irritating oils in common use and appears in one of the seven blends. Fine in a diffuser at the printed count; keep it out of anything going on skin.

Patch test each new one. Diluted oil on the inner forearm, left 24 hours. Fifteen oils is fifteen separate questions — tolerating lavender tells you nothing about lemongrass.

Children, pregnancy and pets. Peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary and cinnamon all carry cautions around young children or in pregnancy, and cats tolerate diffused oils poorly. Ventilate the room and stop if anyone — or any animal — seems unsettled.

Small bottles, out of reach. Fifteen 5ml bottles are easy for a child to open. Store the box high, away from heat and naked flame, and wipe spills at once — undiluted oil marks polished wood, paint and some plastics.

Caution: For external use only. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, and sensitive areas. Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin, and patch test any oil you have not used before.
