Set up the holder. Place the wooden holder on a stable, heat-safe surface and press a stick firmly into its hole so it stands secure and slightly angled.

Light the tip. Hold a flame to the tip of the stick for a few seconds until it catches and glows.

Fan out the flame. Gently blow the flame out so the stick settles into a slow, even smolder over the length of the holder.

Ventilate and clear up. Burn in a well-ventilated room, supervise throughout, and tip the cooled ash off the holder once the stick has finished.
